Did Tim Sloan, the new CEO of Wells Fargo, tell us a lie? As the sell-at-all-costs sales culture at the banking giant became known to the public, Sloan stated “I’m not aware of any overbearing sales culture” at the institution. Yet, with the data we have now, it’s clear that employees worked in an environment where they were pressured to take unethical action.

At this very moment leaders everywhere are taking pause and asking questions they don’t always ask. News that employees of Wells Fargo created fictitious accounts – and put honest consumers at risk in the process – should have every leader assessing important dynamics within their organization. Yet, will they see the whole picture – and ask better questions? We must if we are to succeed.

I am a frequent flyer on Delta Airlines. Fortunately I did not travel this week and avoided the system outage that resulted in hundreds of cancelled flights. Everyone is talking about how the disruption of service affected travelers and there is no doubt that the impact was significant. Others are speculating how this incident, and a similar one at Southwest, will impact these companies in the long-term.

We’ve all seen it happen: A leader ascends to a top position, only to see their effectiveness erode because they believe they are superior to those they lead. When we error in defining reality we distance ourselves from realizing potential.

I recognize these errors because I have been guilty in committing them. Not everyone suffers these mistakes, though they occur with enough frequency in the ranks of leadership that it’s important to be aware of these causes of demise.  

I have created my Rules of Communication. They pretty much are the same rules for life. Sometimes people will say that they did not know that there were rules. That excuse never works for me when I say to the nice policeman that I did not know the speed limit was 25mph. He says, here’s the ticket.

Sports is a public example of protecting one’s value or not protecting one’s value, of communicating one’s value or doing a poor job of communicating one’s own value are easy targets to point out and to pick on whether the reader is a sports enthusiast or not.
