Leadership seems to get harder and harder. Jamie Dimon lives with daily headlines debating whether or not he will retain both jobs: Chairman and CEO of J.P. Morgan Chase. President Obama battles the curse of the second term while attempting to defend against debacles from Benghazi to the IRS.  Leadership turmoil ranges across Greece, France, and Egypt.  At a time there is such an outcry for the ideal of stronger leaders, reality presents us with leaders who are really struggling.

Organizations and individuals that create lasting change share one common trait and it’s grit. Grit is having a resilient attitude in the face of failure or despair. It means enduring years of obscurity and hard work without reaping the immediate payoff.

Grit brings to mind pictures of the old American frontier, of pioneers and their resolve. It also evokes images of mountaineers and extreme sports junkies rising to the top of their game, some even dying to get there. It’s the stuff of injuries, setbacks, and hard knocks.

Do you like it when people push you?  Does it increase your motivation to do what they want?  Chances are if you are like most people, you don't like being pushed and it more often triggers your resentment more than it motivates you.

More than ever before, people see through the self-serving tactics and techniques that others use to persuade them. They don’t like being pushed, played or nudged to comply, and they resist and resent not being heard.

If you have been kind enough to follow my blog, you will then know that I have talked about this phenomenon in the past. However, an article by John Kotter in the November 2012 issue of Harvard Business Review got me thinking deeply about the duality of organizations.

Say what you will about Tim Tebow, believe what you want to believe about him because I am not here to sell you on him. I am here to talk about a lesson that became painfully apparent for those watching when he was cut by the New York Jets this off season. It is a lesson to which those of us in the corporate world should pay close attention.
