After multiple encounters over the past few weeks with several personalities in the corporate world that were on the verge of being out of control, those recent experiences inspired me to create a new series of blog entries over the coming months.  These entries will be focused on the ramifications and effects surrounding ego in the business world.

Here I am the owner of a company that provides Travel and Meeting Management services and I have not taken my Executive Team offsite for our annual planning session in far too many years. That changed this past week when my team and I traveled to the El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico for our planning session (it is a great place by the way). I didn’t care that it sounded like a vacation and nor should you - ever. We got such better results from these days together than at the past local meetings we have ever had. The businesses’ need to cut back on costs and achieve higher operating efficiency has made the idea of hiring independent contractors more lucrative with every passing day. While most professionals finish the task, get paid and never think about it until the tax time is around the corner, there are businesses that misclassify their workers erroneously due to the complex nature of tax laws or deliberately to save on additional employment costs. Such misclassification can have a deep and negative impact on your business, both financial as well as reputational.

When P.F. Chang’s China Bistro Ltd. this month reported a data breach that had targeted customers’ credit and debit card numbers has been contained, and the company is providing identity protection services for customers who may have been affected. The Wall Street Journal reports one key piece of information that should sound the alarm bell to all companies: some of the suspected breaches date back to October 2013. Cyber thieves share the same motivation of the businesses they’re attacking: to make money.

Over 100 million US workers receive health insurance through their employers. And provisions in the Affordable Care Act give those companies additional incentives to help their employees be more proactive about their health. As a result, HR departments are spending more time and money on employee health and wellness than ever before. For self-insuring employers looking to control costs -- and smart employees looking to control health insurance premiums-- robust and engaging employee health programs can be a great solution.
