What needs to change so your business is future-proof? Our experience and research show it is primarily to do with the points of view you hold about your business and the environment in which it operates.

The last decade has witnessed revolutionary changes to business across the globe. Today’s business leaders have to wrestle with diverse, intricate and multifaceted challenges: globalization, technological advances, digitization, climate change, organizational sustainability, a global credit crunch—the list is endlessly growing. If your business strategy and mindset is not prepared for the future, your business will become irrelevant. In this complex business environment, doing business-as-usual is a formula for business failure.

Great innovative service leaders view freedom as a crucial characteristic to cultivate ingenuity and creativity.  Consider three of the most innovative service cultures—Zappos, Nordstrom and Ritz-Carlton Hotels—and you will discover each is a wellspring of employee freedom.  One of Zappos’ core values is “create fun and a little weirdness.” Nordstrom tells employees their only rule: “Use your good judgment in all situations.”  And, a core Ritz-Carlton Hotel value is:  “I am empowered to create unique, memorable and personal experiences for our guests.”  Nurturing freedom is a lot like mining.

Has starting up your own business ever crossed your mind?  Do you consider yourself an entrepreneur?  I consider myself an entrepreneur, but I do not always want to view myself as an entrepreneur.  With experience and success I hope to transition from an entrepreneur to an investor that supplies capital and experience to help young entrepreneurs get started.   Starting up a business can be exciting due to the anticipation of the success you plan to experience along with the perceived freedom that comes with starting up a business.

The workplace is always evolving which requires flexibility on the part of business leaders. Often, projects arise that require more manpower than a firm can manage, or a specialized skill set outside the scope of the company’s capabilities. When these projects are slated with a short-term project timeline, business leaders are faced with the question of how to appropriately staff the project. Do they overload the current workforce in order to control costs? Or look for an outside hire to provide subject-matter expertise.

The tragic death of Robin Williams has brought international attention to the devastating effects of depression. More and more people are becoming aware that depression is not simply being in a “bad mood,” but rather a serious mental disorder associated with intense suffering, loss of functioning and, in the most severe and tragic cases, death. As a result, the World Health Organization is calling depression a “global public health concern.” Depression is rated as the second leading cause of overall disability worldwide, and one of the most insidious ways that it causes damage is through loss of work productivity. Understanding and managing depression is crucial to creating a strong corporate culture, and should be a top concern of every employer.
