In today’s social media world, small businesses are finding social media platforms like Twitter increasingly important to bring new business in the door. Twitter is unique because as a public forum it allows for intent-based marketing, or opportunities for small businesses to join in on relevant conversations in real time, in a personal and direct way.

When the social media team at British entertainment retailer HMV decided to tweet out the details of a mass layoff, the company couldn’t stop them. According to Business Insider, HMV’s official account tweeted, “There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand.”

Not so loyal anymore.

I arrived at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead in Atlanta late in the afternoon at the end of a week on the road.  My dress pants needed pressing for an early morning keynote.  Dialing the hotel housekeeping department I was told that someone would be right up to get my trousers.  Moments later, a tiny Asian women in her mid-fifties knocked on my door.  When I gave her my pants she informed me she would have them back to me in less than an hour.  “If you have to leave,” she told me, “your pants will be waiting for you in your closet.”

When women have an idea to start a business, most suffer from “analysis paralysis” which means they analyze their business idea over and over until it ultimately prevents them from moving forward with the idea. For example, when a woman has a good idea for a business venture she tends to consult with family and friends, and listen to advice from people who may notunderstand the subject or business at hand, or have any experience in this area. Most men, on the other hand, have an idea, take the initiative and just do it. Women tend to “talk it over” too much and this just makes them lose momentum.

You are not feeling well, so you visit your friendly family doctor. He puts you in a new, electronic scanner and generates 28 trillion measurements of your temperature all over the surface of your body. He then saves all of these big-data measurements and, using advanced statistical algorithms and supercomputers, announces that your temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. What a relief! Big data to the rescue.
