Part of the formula for a vibrant and sustainable culture is hiring inspired and talented people. But, it’s not enough for you to bring people on board who share your values and your purpose. You need to keep these people on board. In most cases, if you’re charismatic, passionate and compelling enough, you’ll usually be able to sell something to someone, whether it’s a product, service or a position within your company. The real challenge however is holding onto the client, or the talented employee. So what’s the formula?

Imagine a business that doesn’t sell a product or provide a service, instead focuses solely on providing an intangible and unquantifiable emotion. Imagine also if one chooses to be involved only when their heart is moved.

This is a challenge in any economic climate but herculean when the economy shifts. As the CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida my business success is dependent on navigating the ebb and flow of life, some joyous, some tragic.

Today leaders are largely defined by two characteristics: an aptitude for making hard decisions; for reading situations and demonstrating credible judgment whilst amplifying certainty, and secondly, an ability to influence others; to persuade, to inspire and to shift hearts and minds.

Both of these characteristics are informed by a leader’s capacity for insight, their understanding of what drives human behavior.
