If you’ve been watching the news lately, you’ve probably seen that big box retailers are already slashing their prices in anticipation for Black Friday, and with good reason: shaky consumer confidence has many people on edge heading into this holiday season – businesses big and small alike.

I was born in the 1980s – the height of trickle down economics and Gordon Gekko – a time when the people and corporations who controlled the money and economics did it from the tops down. Today, while most of the money remains in the hands of the richest 1% of Americans, technology has unleashed the capabilities of ordinary Americans to take matters into their own hands, crafting their own livelihoods – creating, in effect, a Bottom Up economic revolution.

In cities around the country there is a major promotion to encourage people to buy from local retailers and businesses. The buzz in commercials and other media outlets is all about “shopping small.”  Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express and now has the support of a number of major partners.  It is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving which this year is November 30th.
