wells fargo, business culture

Did Tim Sloan, the new CEO of Wells Fargo, tell us a lie? As the sell-at-all-costs sales culture at the banking giant became known to the public, Sloan stated “I’m not aware of any overbearing sales culture” at the institution. Yet, with the data we have now, it’s clear that employees worked in an environment where they were pressured to take unethical action.

Leaders think strategically, understand the critical link between focus and clarity, and appreciate the value of time.  So fewer and fewer are inclined to let others waste their time. Brevity has become a basic communication skill for professionals.

Here are six best practices as a leader:

Be brief when speaking off-the-cuff. Lectures are for the classroom. Make your point and move on.

Managers hear questions every day.  Some serious; some trivial.  “Are the merger rumors true?” “How much is our budget being cut?”  “Can we extend our deadline a couple of days?”  “Is our team going to have to work over the weekend?”

But the ONE question that you have to answer correctly every single time is this:  “What are you working on?”

It’s particularly crucial that you give the answer right when responding to your own boss. But your reputation can also suffer when you blow that question with your colleagues.
