Why is it some people seem to effortlessly persuade and move an audience, while others find it almost impossible? What defines the mystery of connection? That mystery has been a subject of fascination for me for most of my life… and it remains a mystery still. And yet, by spending many years trying to crack the code of connection I’ve observed several things that are consistent.

In survey after survey, “communication” makes the top 3 list: why marriages end, why mergers don’t work, why management has difficulty leading employees through change, why employees leave an organization, why customers stop doing business with a firm.

Or, on the positive side, great communication is why marriages work, mergers go smoothly, employees embrace change, employees love their job and their boss, and why customers rave about the customer service where they do business.

Whether you’re facing a media interview, writing your professional bio, or drafting a press release, messaging is important.  By following a few simple steps, you can improve your messaging and, in the process, your image and sales.

Before you start, think about who your core audience is.  Don’t say “the media”.  Who are you try to communicate with through the media?  Draft your message, keeping your audience and their needs in mind.
