This is National Small Business Week.The celebrations, seminars and promotion are in full swing. As a Board Member of the National Small Business Association (NSBA) and Chair of the Small Business Association of Michigan’s PAC, I know how important it is to support and promote small business. There has been a lot of hype this week, so I thought it might be a good time to stop and consider the state of small business in America.

Diversity and Inclusion in corporate America may seem like buzz words, just a lot of hype. But, it is becoming more and more important to the fabric of many of the large companies for which I work. I have helped many of them create communications around their diversity efforts and in the process I have learned a lot. Diversity has a much broader meaning than it did many years ago. In the past, it was about race and gender. Today diversity is about age, background, life experience and so much more. Simply put it is about recognizing and embracing all the things that make individuals unique.

It’s that time of year. Requests are pouring in to my company to sponsor golf outings, make charitable donations, buy gala tickets and attend award luncheons. I don’t know about other business owners but it seems like I could be at an event every day. I also notice that I keep running into the same people at these events. It made me stop and think. If you own a business you are a target because everyone assumes that you have the means to help. These requests for support are generally from very worthy organizations but you simply can’t support all of them.
