In this day and age of social media, contests are all the rage. At CK & CO we have sponsored contests and competed in contests. This past year we sponsored a video contest for high school and college students and awarded a cash prize. We also just competed in a contest sponsored by Supplier Connection. http://supplierconnectionblog.net/cynthiakaythinkcreatively/

Both were great visibility boosters for our business but before you decide to do either there are a few things you might want to consider.

Security Practices Every Business Should Follow

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, secure is as secure doesProtecting your business is an ongoing process. After all, security threats never take a day off. It pays to take precautions on both sides of the door.

One of the “realities” I’ve discovered through the years of business ownership, consulting and speaking, is that the customer or client rarely sees you as YOU see you. This is known as Perceptual Reality. In his book Magical Worlds of the Wizard of Ads, Roy H. Williams defines Perceptual Reality as our imagination. We spend a great deal of time there, and while there we create ideas and perceptions of ourselves that simply are not true or real.

Do you ever feel like you are on a treadmill dealing with the same concerns year after year?  I do when it comes to small business issues. First a little background. In 2012, members of the National Small Business Association (NSBA) met in Washington, DC for the Small Business Congress to discuss an agenda for the 113th Congress. There were more than 30 different issues that were debated and the group settled on the Top 10. As the 114th Congress gets underway, I decided to take look back to get some perspective.

The controversy over the hacking of SONY continues to be in the news for many reasons. There is the release of information about celebrities, the discussion about theaters refusing to show the movie and of course the US sanctions imposed on North Korea. Central to this story is the security of data and protecting data from cyberattacks. While this discussion continues to evolve it brought another thought to my mind. Many small businesses do not protect or back-up their data and do not believe that they will be the target of a cyberattack.
