I recently had the opportunity to talk to a group of individuals who are focused on selling to small and medium size businesses. I was trying to give them a snapshot of the profile of the small business owner and why we are very different than the large, complex customers they typically serve. While one should never view all small businesses under the same lens there are some things that I know are typical with the small businesses I work with around the country. To begin, small businesses make buying decisions quickly and usually consider a number of factors. Here are a few.

It happens every year. I start out with good intentions of making sure I have time for mid-year planning but things just seem to move too quickly and before I know it the year has passed and I have to scramble. This year I made a conscious effort to do a mid-year business check-up and change my approach.

When you a run a small business it is easy to be so involved in the day to day work that you simply don’t have the time to think. But if you break down your operation into a few “big buckets” then it makes the job easier. Here are a few thoughts.

Diversity and Inclusion in corporate America may seem like buzz words, just a lot of hype. But, it is becoming more and more important to the fabric of many of the large companies for which I work. I have helped many of them create communications around their diversity efforts and in the process I have learned a lot. Diversity has a much broader meaning than it did many years ago. In the past, it was about race and gender. Today diversity is about age, background, life experience and so much more. Simply put it is about recognizing and embracing all the things that make individuals unique.
