In 2002, while relaxing at Everest Base Camp, I fell into conversation with Dan, a fellow climber about to make his fifth attempt to reach the summit alone. Dan was determined to be completely self-sufficient, carrying all of his own gear and climbing without a guide. I wondered why anyone would take on such a huge challenge without accepting even a modicum of help. But I wished him luck and rejoined my team to prepare for our climb of the treacherous Khumbu Ice Fall, the first major obstacle on our route to the summit.

Whether you’re facing a media interview, writing your professional bio, or drafting a press release, messaging is important.  By following a few simple steps, you can improve your messaging and, in the process, your image and sales.

Before you start, think about who your core audience is.  Don’t say “the media”.  Who are you try to communicate with through the media?  Draft your message, keeping your audience and their needs in mind.

Most start-ups need to secure a small initial investment (seed capital) in order to have the resources in place to get their companies off the ground. Many get their seed capital in the form of ‘friends and family money’ which I think is always a very good idea for a few reasons. One, because seed money is normally too small to entice a more sophisticated investor to get involved, and secondly, you have a much better chance of securing an investment from people who are already routing for your success.

How is your day going so far?  Are you improving the world, or are you enjoying it?  Perhaps you are able to juggle well and do both, and then again, perhaps not!  We all know that life gets in the way. From the mailroom to the boardroom, we all need balance, and we need it sooner rather than later.

It’s a sad but true fact that it can be difficult for employees to focus on work over the holiday season, even while more and more of them take less time off. A 2013 survey by CareerBuilder revealed that about half of all employees planned on doing some of their holiday shopping online at work. Earlier this year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported productivity among U.S. workers is actually up more than one percent from Q2 of 2013 to Q2 of this year. Let’s look at three ways you can maintain or even improve productivity in a race to finish 2015 strong.
