When describing the life of a CEO, ‘busy’ doesn’t cut it. Be they at the start of their business journey when every dollar counts, or helming a team of hundreds, a CEO is usually spread thinner than that precious last scrape of Nutella. Budgets, reports, legal issues, people management and operational issues make up the day, escalating as you grow. What you invest in personally becomes crucial to success and here are three things I’ve learnt not to skimp on along the way:

Understanding the benefits available in a severance package is essential to protecting yourself and your family.  Have the conversation now, so you don’t regret it later. Focus on the end as much as on the beginning.

Keep your head down. Do the job you know you’re good at and collect your paycheck. Don’t rock the boat. Don’t risk failure. Most of us have some form of inner voice that has spoken these words to us at one point or another over the course of our professional lives. And there is some truth there; it is certainly less risky to do what you know and color within the lines… but will you ever be satisfied with that kind of life? Will you ever reach your professional potential and maximize your earning power if your entire focus is on staying near the safety of familiar shores? In a word, no.
