At work we display some of our worst behaviors. When an employee makes a mistake during a crucial, high-pressure period, we might get into a negative attitude and our mind screams, "He's incompetent."

When the buck stops with you, it can be difficult to separate yourself from work.  Being on the receiving end of pressure from shareholders, the sense of responsibility to do right by those who report to you, and the ultimate accountability that comes with being at the helm of an organization, can sometimes feel like a burden.  Add to that the ubiquitous smart phone making one accessible around the clock, and one can understand how difficult it can be for CEOs to “unplug” and take full advantage of down-time.

Airline captains don’t have an “open door policy, and there’s a good reason for that. Aside from the obvious terrorist and crazy passenger threats, airline pilots realize they face another adversary: treacherous interruptions.

In 1974 an Eastern Airlines flight carrying seventy-eight passengers and four crew members crashed in dense fog during an instrument approach into Charlotte, killing seventy-one. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the flight crew’s lack of altitude awareness and poor cockpit discipline caused the crash.

I call meditation “The Wizard of Oz” or my “behind the scenes” component to my business mantra of “make a lot of money, help a lot of people, and have a lot of fun”. I start off every day mediating for twenty minutes. I find the practice so important on so many levels.

If you haven’t meditated before, it’s akin to when you first decide to start working out.You begin slowly. You keep the threshold low.

I recently had the distinct pleasure to listen to a great speaker at a conference. I thought it would be the same, blah, blah, economic or business update. Boy, was I surprised. The speaker’s name was Anthony Robles and he was a wrestler at Mesa High School with a 96-0 record, a 2-time Arizona State Champion and a high school National Champion. After high school, he walked onto the Arizona State University wrestling team to prove to them, and to the world, that anything was possible. Through trials and hardships, both on and off the wrestling mat, he finished as a 3-time All-American and the 2011 NCAA National Champion in his weight class. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? What you don’t know was that he was only born with one leg.
