Many individuals want the prestige of being in Management, yet they lack the understanding that extra work and responsibility is part of the package.  The honest truth is that leaders always have to take on more work than others, and often must be prepared to sacrifice additional amounts of their time beyond the norm in order to maintain the workflow of their organizations.

The Rocky franchise first came into our lives in 1976. Detroit and Motown both were still churning out hits. Rocky gave the world this quote that remains as true today for business as when these words were mumbled by the prizefighter 37 years ago. “It's about how hard you get hit . .  . How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done.”

Yet many elements of leadership in the 21st century have changed. An effective leader needs to identify which qualities have stayed the same and which qualities have evolved. Leadership is very different in some core ways than it was just a few years ago.

I’m sure you’ve seen this as many times as I have.  People sit around a meeting table, nodding agreement as their leaders explain the plan for a critical change initiative.  Once the meeting is over, they push back their chairs and drift towards their desks.  As they congregate at the water cooler, they open up to each other:  “That’ll never happen!”  “What a pile of crap!”  “I can hardly wait until the weekend.”
