I recently gave a talk on the chemistry of strategy to the CEO Club of Boston. The talk was scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and to finish no later than 11 a.m. I’ve devoted the last forty years to this topic, so I could have talked for hours. But I didn’t. Why? Because I knew the people in the audience had planned their day around the meeting finishing on time. Many attendees had made commitments for later in the day -- follow-up telephone calls, other meetings, and delivery of projects they had committed to finish that day.

The 80/20 Rule has long been an axiom for executives who tend to apply it to nearly every aspect of their businesses. The Rule postulates that 80 percent of results stem from 20 percent of activities; e.g. 80 percent of sales revenue is generated by 20 percent of the sales team—a soft metric for projecting the quality of workforce output.

It’s a tough talent world out there. While the economy is picking up, workers are disenchanted. Worldwide, as a recent Gallup poll shows, only 13% of them are engaged. Many employees feel disconnected from their leadership: Studies indicate that trust in business leaders is extremely low, and there is a concerning gap between management believing their staff is inspired by their company’s mission and how committed their employees truly are.

In this day and age of information gathering, online data breaches are all too common whether you own a large or small business. 2015 was plagued with news about consumers getting their identity stolen from companies such as Home Depot, Target and now Sony Pictures.

According to information compiled by the nonprofit consumer advocacy Identity Theft Resource Center, as of Nov. 19, there had been 679 major data breaches reported this year, up about 25 percent over this time last year. What happens if the breach hits home and is your business ready?

In baseball and soccer we get immediate feedback on our performance. You quickly see the number of runs scored or goals made in a game. Unfortunately, it isn’t the same for most of us in our professional lives. While you’re in the game, your coach is observing and assessing every play and letting you know how you did and what to do next time. But in the working world, it could take weeks or months to find out how you’re performing on the job; sometimes, that feedback comes too little or too late. Don’t wait to dump all your feedback in one review, coach your employees all year long.
